some brake cleaners leave a residue. I use denatured alcohol for the wipe downs I do. Krylon makes a matte clear if you blacks are too glossy. I'd check the paint can...65 might be OK if the humidity is low.

Yep. Shoot the whole thing when done with the flat clear. It is a chore to find the matte clear though.

@Rebel_Rider1969 I used Xylene to strip the .308 barrel I did recently. It is a slower drying solvent that Mineral Spirits so you get a longer working time.
Where do you get it? The barrel has "ridges" might be a chf barrel. It's very important that it dosent damage the factory finish on the barrel, sort of collectable. Tks

You can get xylene at any paint store and probably lowes or Home Depot. It’s not very “aggressive” compared to lacquer thinner or acetone so not sure if it will help you or not

Topic may be beaten to death but I’ve aquired an old H&R Topper single barrel 410 shotgun, there’s absolutely no bluing left on the barrel. Planning on just spray painting it black, looking at using Rustoleum High Temp grill paint, not going the Durocoat route, costs too much. Opinions ? Keeping project on a budget…
I have used VHT high heat black on a couple of guns works great and inexpensive. You can always just redo it when it gets scratched up.

I don't know if I'd go with the paint...Cold bluing has work great for me on numerous occasions. Kept repeating the process until I got the desired color.

You didn't say the condition of the metal, scratched, rusted, pitted, nor a picture, so not sure it's condition?
No way would I use "steel wool" on the barrel. It will scratch the piss out of the metal. But maybe it's already scratched to hello and back?
Use Stainless Steel wool on it. Stainless Steel will not scratch the metal, nor the bluing, if it has any left. Clean it good with SS, then wipe it down good with acetone (don't let it get on the furniture) or denatured alcohol. Then you can spray paint it.
I have an old model 300 Ithaca. Had it since early early 70's. House burnt down in the 80's, the barrel got extremely hot on the shotgun before I could get inside and grab it (Firemen kept pulling me back out from the window).
It scorched 60% of the bluing off, charred the stock to the point of having to be replaced. It will not hold a bluing, so I periodically clean it like stated above, and spray it with black rust-oleum spray paint.
Hasn't rusted since the 80's. Actually, it doesn't look that bad after "touching" it up.

Warm outside today, put some color on it, better than bare steel. If I don’t like it after it dries I can always strip it and try putting some bluing on it
