Topic may be beaten to death but I’ve aquired an old H&R Topper single barrel 410 shotgun, there’s absolutely no bluing left on the barrel. Planning on just spray painting it black, looking at using Rustoleum High Temp grill paint, not going the Durocoat route, costs too much. Opinions ? Keeping project on a budget…

I wouldn't see any issue as long as you prep the metal, sand\prime. I added one too many coats to a pump shotgun before and had to cycle it a bit to clear the contact points. That shouldn't be a problem for yours though

I agree that I see no issue with it. I would probably not sand any more rough than steel wool but make sure to degrease it well. I would use aerosol brake cleaner. Honestly high temp paint is probably overkill for a single shot. I have done Krylon camo on several ARs and shotguns and have never noticed a color change due to heat.

Grill paint is going to leave a flatter finish than a factory phosphate barrel.
I would for sure use engine paint of some sort. Satin would be my choice, but just my opinion.

Maybe use Alumahyde, it lasts even when exposed to gun solvents, oils, etc. Its more expensive than Krylon and such, but it lasts for a long time

I didn't know engine paint came in flat finish. I always equatede engine paint being high gloss. Gloss is not the finish I would go for in a stalking type gun. I very much like the earlier suggestion of Alumahyde. In addition,100% life time no questions asked guarantee from Brownells. Alumahyde comes in 6-7 (maybe more) different flat or semi gloss finishes and colors as well.

Appreciate all the advice, as I said earlier keeping this project on a budget. Engine paint was a very good idea but could only get it in gloss black at Walmart tonight, and high temp grill paint was twice the price of what I bought here and it was all in gloss black. I think this can of semi gloss will do okay, picked up some brake cleaner to clean up the barrel, I think it’ll be too cool tomorrow outside to paint but as soon as we get a day over 70 degrees I’ll finish it up and post a picture of the completed project. I don’t remember who I bought this 410 off of but remember paying $50 for it, had to replace the stock on it as it had been cut off short for a kid to use and the barrel had no bluing at all on it. Little gun locks up tight like it’s brand new, nothing like an old single barrel.
