How do you ship? I hear USPS says no. Do you have to have FFL license? Or can a John Q Public like myself ship via FedEx or UPS and pay the hazmat fee?

US Postal Service absolutely not. I recently received an order of powder from midwayusa with fees charged for hazmat. I have never tried to ship powder myself, only received it.

Last I checked with FedEx you had to get some type of HazMat certification and/or class... but that was years ago.

Best to contact your local UPS or FedEx customer service center/Hub and get the updated skinny. I'm quite sure a private citizen can ship HazMat but there are "must do's" I'm sure concerning packaging and appropriate labels.

You can search ‘kit for shipping hazardous materials’. Should be able to get proper packaging and labels. The advice above is good. Get with ups or fed-ex and understand the requirements. They should be able to help with classification, UN numbers and such. As I remember it , just filling out the hazardous cargo manifest would make you pull your hair out. I haven’t done it in 20 yrs or so. Safe to say it ain’t going to be simpler today than it was then.

I do know many things go as:

ORM-D (other regulated materials for domestic transport only) was a marking for mail or shipping in the United States. Packages bearing this mark contained hazardous material in a limited quantity that present a limited hazard during transportation, due to its form, quantity, and packaging.

That’s true and might cover powder. But I’m thinking powder would be classified as an explosive. But, on the other hand, the explosive classification may be dictated by the amount being shipped. I’m not sure. It’ll be a pita regardless.

Take the hazmat training from UPS or FedEx and then ship according to their requirements. Does not require a GFL.
