I had a strange thing happen day before yesterday, I got a call from my Gulf Winds fraud alert # the caller had a jihad Jimmie accent and he explained who he was with and that there was a transaction made on my card , he wanted to know did I make this purchase. I told him no I hadn’t, so then he asked me to verify my card number beginning with the first four numbers on the card. I gave him some wrong numbers then he asked about my debit card, don’t have one I told him. What troubles me is he had my name the correct Gulf Winds number, and my phone number plus he had the first four numbers on my card. I immediately went to my credit union and canceled my card just for safety sake. My credit union said that this definitely was a fraud call. The guy was very professional and convincing so my point is don’t give out your information cause your bank won’t ask questions like he asked and if you feel like your account has been compromised just go to your local bank and take care of your business.

I had a similar call a year, or so, ago supposedly from Navy Federal. The caller ID showed the correct number and name.
Like your call, the guy was very polite and professional. He told me they detected fraudulent login attempts using my online account banking credentials. Everything was very believable until he asked me to verify my online account login credentials.

    "What?!?!"
He said, "Well, I just need you to verify your username and password."
    Me: "No you don't."
"Sir, we need to get this account locked down right away to prevent fraudulent activity before any funds can be removed from your account."

Me: "I've been working in IT for 30 years and there's no way I'm giving you my login credentials. I'm hanging up now and calling Navy Federal."

I get Emails like that about 4 times a week from everything from PayPal, Netflix account to banks and credit cards I don't even have. They are doing something with your phone number too. especially on Marketplace these people asking you to text or call them, they want your phone number for some scamming reason.
I am starting to see that HERE a lot too. "Interested, please text me ............." I don't know what they do with that, but it is some kind of scam??

I've gotten a lot of messages just like that "here's my number text me". Unless I've had dealings with a person before I always do all of the communication through pms before I give out my number. Unfortunately, that's the world we live in these days.

I get the same calls and emails. I just ignore them. I also received a 'still available?' PM with a phone # here the other day, asking about a sale item that's clearly marked as available. I replied to the PM but didn't call or text...I didn't hear from him again although he has been online here since. Seems there are efforts to get phone numbers, but I don't play....that's why I insist upon PM conversations before moving on to phone calls or texts. Be careful, and never disclose personal information to unknowns.

mine was a polite PM asking if an item was still available & leaving a phone number. I didn't think much about it (other than the fact that my listing said it was available) until my PM (no call or text) seemed to go ignored. This made me wonder if the person was just fishing for phone numbers. Might have been legit & he just lost interest, but it made me wonder.

edited to add...off the topic of this thread, but I'm reminded of the (well known) member who once PM'd me, asking if I had the box for a rifle I had for sale. I hadn't even thought about the box, but I told him I'd check. I dug around the attic and found it. I replied the same day, saying yes, I have it. I never heard from him again. I file these incidents under the heading of "WTF?"

I have no TV nor Internet service at my home. I have 3 store credit cards I use only when I can use them without interest, 90 days or 6 months.
I get calls, unless it's an expected call or from my contacts I never answer. But it's my understanding scammers buy our information, who's gathering & selling is the scary part...

I'm seeing a scam beginning this year that y'all haven't listed yet:

I seldom place on line orders - Like 2 this year. Yet they seem to know when I'm expecting a delivery!
Both times I have gotten a call says the package is at the local (using real name) hub but can't be delivered due to lost of information.
Then they begin requesting info. I just tell them no, I'll come by today and pick it up.
But do nothing, wait and package is delivered just fine.

Scarry - Wonder how they know the package is on way and my phone number.

You may need to change your email password. Or they breached the vendors data base

As careful as I am, I actually fell for something similar. I was expecting a large ammo order and got a text messages saying UPS missed me and needed a $2-3 re-delivery fee, that I gave my debit info for, but was not charged. Immediately looked it up, yep scam, debit card cancelled. I figure they were planning a much larger charge.
Just wait, all the new AI scams are just starting...

I never give anything out over the phone or email unless I initiated the contact with a known vendor. Even when it is a company I regularly do business with who is contacting me, I get their name and call them back on the number that I already have in my phone or an email address I have confirmed and typed in myself. I never click the links anyone provides me with.

Most of the time the scam calls get stopped because they aren’t in my address book, but sometimes I do have to turn that off if I’m expecting a one-off call.

I have a friend in cybersecurity and he successfully made me a bit paranoid.

I order online quite often and have never received a bogus call or email regarding a real delivery, although I have received bogus emails teling me there is a problem with some nonexistant delivery, which I ignore. I've been the 'victim' of some attempted and successful credit card fraud (no liability on me) over the years that requited new cards/numbers to be issued, but I've had credit freezes on my accounts with the credit reporting agences for many years, so no real damage has been done (knock wood). I also don't own and would never use a debit card for anything, ever. JMO

I’ve gotten text messages supposedly from the USPS saying that my package has arrived at the warehouse but can’t be delivered because of an error with my address. They ask for my address so they can deliver the package but there’s a problem since I haven’t ordered anything
My address is readily available if you know my real name but since my phone is under my sisters name it doesn’t show up on a phone number database.

Names and phone numbers are easy to find/discover, the call itself is not suspect.

There are very few people that don't get deliveries anymore, these scam attempts are just playing the odds. They send out or call 1000 people they are bound to hit a decent percentage of people expecting deliveries.
