I been bouncing back from being out of shape.
background early 50s male, overweight, have been in great shape most of my life but fell off the exervise horse in past 18 months as I sometimes do (exacerbated by the "pandemic")

Am real happy with my fitness progression in past 4 weeks.
Finishing my 4th week of 4-5 workout per week. alternating a cardio ( light run or a heavy ruck) with a full body Gym workout.
    I intersperse off days.

    Happy with the results,
My speeds in the Cardio events are noticeably improving and I can pack on noticeably more weight in the gym w/o feeling struggling with it too badly.

The shape of my body has also improved in subtle ways, am still fairly fat but my shoulders appear wider/more defined and my middle a tad less pronounced.
If the light is right, my blood vessels are starting to be visible with a bit of definition on my shoulders even.
And most importantly my gait has regained the control and swagger of a younger man.

I also support my exercise regimen with slightly improved eating habits and plenty of sleep.

However I may take 2 days in a row off on legs after Sundays run.
    Why?:

As I started my regimen, after 2 weeks my right foot is starting to swell for no apparent reason.

Nothing crazy but noticeable both in feel (I can feel my skin stretch) and when I compare visually to my left foot.
Also today during air squats to warm up for regular weighed squats, I felt my left knee nearly give way twice in a nervous twitch.. so I think a tendon may be getting inflamed there.
Will put myself on 880 mg Naproxen/day for next 7 days and perhaps not do any leg at all Monday and Tuesday (after Sundays run which I will still do).

    Thoughts?

Just from having been a PTL how is your stance on the squats?

Diagnosing someone over the internet or phone is like asking a mechanic whats wrong with my car? There are many reasons for feet swelling. Try to name a couple.

One is blood clots. Deep vein thrombosis. That usually has pain with it. Blood cant get back to the heart well and the serum leaks into tissue.

Another is when the valves in the veins get damaged. They are supposed to keep blood from flowing backward away from returning to the heart.

Diabetes is another blood flow is blocked by sugar basically.

A bad liver is another. Liver makes this protein called Albumin. It stays in the blood and kinda acts like a thickener to keep the serum from leaking out of the vessels. Its more about keeping the pressure though.

Maybe in your case you went at it too hard in beast mode and injured vessels in the right leg and maybe an injury to left knee. Nobody in the world can tell you what it is without further test and scans like ultrasound and guessing until they’re right. Thats pro medicine lol

Keep your feet propped up above your heart when you lay down to help the flow back to the heart. Thats what swelling is, a bloodflow problem, then the plasma leaks out and causes edema. If it continues for awhile after rest go see the dr. Hope its nothing and rest fixes it. Goodluck man.

^^^THIS!^^ You are getting to age where you should have a Cardiologist appointment annually. I didn't until I had quadruple bypass surgery at 55 but had I done so I likely could have avoided the major life altering event! Just my .02 worth!

Nearing 60 I'll tell you that you can still workout every day, but you have to moderate/watch the intensity. Too much and you'll start feeling/seeing it. Either you'll be weaker in the next workout, start hurting, just can't recover, or all. You'll know, add some recovery days.

I strongly recommend the carnivore/keto diets. 'Nough said.

Pain is what pain is. Some is sign of progress, at other times a warning. If it persists, is chronic, you need to evaluate/adjust.

Swelling in the lower extremities; probably need to get that one checked out. Although, personally, I suspect any Dr whose first COA is medication for the rest of your life. Ask, what can I do to reverse this naturally. If their answer is medication, BS, go somewhere else. Get other opinions.

You’ve got to face the fact that you aren’t a kid anymore and can’t do what you used to do.
If it hurts, don’t do it or at least give it a rest.
I’m now using weights that are half the poundage of what I was using 20 years ago but at least I’m staying with it.
Whereas the goal back then was to stay buff, the goal now is to stay alive and be able to keep moving a few more years.
Listen to your body and tailor your workouts accordingly. Slow and steady is the way to do it.

Yep Allopathic Pharm meds are crap. They should change medical school name to Pharma School. Doctors are trained to treat symptoms with whatever they're paid to prescribe. Cure is a cussword. If they wore sponsors on the labcoats theyd look like Nascar drivers. Ive found the best way is eat clean, drink clean distilled water, exercise and not stress over bullshit. Cortisol will F you up. 2000 calories a day is a lie. We need time to let the body detox. Fast in the morning. Skip breakfast. The body is detoxing at night and after you get up. Itll burn your fat and the toxins in it. The second you “break-fast” the body has to go digest and hate you lol.

    Not perfect.

I am grateful for everybody's input.
Alas I feel I could have given more data:

What I failed to mention is that my right foot has been slightly bigger than my left ever since I was bitten by a poisonous spider during an FTX
    But only slightly.
Now its a bit more but swelling going down this morning.

I was wondering if I had been bitten by a bug again unbeknownst to me (I sometimes ruck through tall grass)
Or maybe connected with the heat somehow I dont always perfectly hydrate...

    My heart however is healthy.
18 months ago I had a battery of test thrown at me to chase down a extreme balance/nausea issue (first time in 25 years I had a medical emergency) and the first suspicion (due to my age and cuz I am overweight) was a mini heart attack.

So we did EKG, Echo cardiogram, Ultrasound and even MRI ( and a few others techniques I forget).
In nearly all of those tests the attending Physician remarked how healthy and clear my blood vessels looked , like a much younger mans.

This was about 18 months ago.
My entire life I had MDs remark make remarks like this during exams as I was generally in really good shape (interrupted by periods of losing said shape and then being forced to get back)

So I suspect my right foot swelling to be something weather related or a bug bite.
There really isnt any pain involved.
When my foot swelled I could feel the skin stretch but it wasn't painful.
Been doing it for a few days.

The thing With my knee I had before maybe 10-11 years ago when I exercised a lot and looked like an extra in a gladiator movie and I had moments when it felt my knee just wanted to give in.
But never really figured out what it was but I eventually had inflammation of the fibula tubula on the left (i ran a LOT back then) and cured that.

Heading out to the range in a few minutes, see you guys later today.

As we get older our metabolism slows down if our eating habits don't slow down as well you get fat. Getting older doesn't mean we have to quit doing the things we did when we were younger, it simply means you have to do them slower and pay more attention to details.

Yep. I'm right at two good carnivore/keto meals a day. I usually eat nothing after 5-6 PM and my first meal is somehwere around 8-9 AM, could be later. Glad I have the luxury of doing that. Some don't, and gotta get it when they can. In the end, I feel good, have more drive/energy than when in my 40s, and I'm watching people get sick all around me, and I'm not. That's not a boast. It's kinda freaky, but I like it.

Hey on a serious note there is some great advise all in here. It starts with you, and your mind and what you are willing to put into it all to get your mind right.
Diet is probably the most crucial part of it all. Knowing when YOUR body processes sugars and fats during the day, not eating late at night works for some, but not all. It’s YOUR body, it’s own routine will tel you. I also personally don’t eat until around 10 each day, very high protein diet, and not usually after 6pm.
“Working out” is different for everyone. I don’t lift weights, go to gyms or have a “workout plan”… but I walk a dog, and I do work hard on the yard and I stretch daily using Budokon techniques.
Targeted fatty areas on the body require targeted approach to resolve it. A full body reduction is much harder all at once.

Knowing your own limits is also crucial, knowing your environmental conditions is just as crucial, especially around here..

Keep doing what you are doing if it is working for you presently. Rest days ARE KEY and those days need to include a stronger protein diet and lots and lots of foot baths.. I’m serious. A foot bath a day will help that circulation. The wrinkling of feet (and hands) like when you are in water for a time, is super healthy for the blood flow and skin retention. This will help your feet after those days.

I don’t like a lot of western medicines.. although some have it right..
Being raised in the Pacific Islands we were taught different approaches. You need more ginger in your diet, lots of garlic, a teaspoon or two of raw apple cider vinegar in a glass of water or juice in the morning and if you are interested you can even add a teaspoon of food grade diatomaceous earth to it too. Listen.. have you ever eaten chicken feet? Humbly, their joint inflammation reduction qualities are unmatched. Prepared right they are tasty too.. and cheap.
Rub lemon juice on your feet when you kick them up if you aren’t foot bathing,
    What else you got??

Fellas thanks a bunch for all the input!
those heart failure possibilities have other symptoms ( weakness, fatigue , shortness of breath etc.) none of which I have , I feel strong and my endurance is way up.

I narrowed it down via webmd to a stress fracture (I have been doing some heavy rucking, and I been running again after a loooong break both big risk factors) but I have no pain during run or rucking or squatting in the foot to indicate anything
....or a bug bite of some kind.
I do have spiders in my apartment.
I leave them alone since spiders take care of roaches , which I luckily have none, ants and mosquitos, also I do ruck through nature and tall grass and I may have felt a small but sharp pain a couple weeks ago before this started but it was minor and I though nothing of it.

The swelling is still pretty mild and foot still fits into my shoes.

Just got back from a ruckmarch.
This sure was a lot easier/faster then when I started 4 weeks ago.
Tho still somewhat swollen as before foot still fit fine into my combat boot.

And the more I think about it the more I recall feeling a bit of a pain one time i put in in a running shoe.
I looked for a thorn after taking off the shoe but found nothing.
Shook out the sock and carried on.

So maybe I did get a bug bite after all.. this was about a week to 10 days ago.

Anyhow just felt i wanted to updated folks form the original post.

Left knee feels fine, but I also been dosing with Naproxen to reduce any inflammation.

Healthcare since 1997. Not going to like my response but you cant outrun or out workout a bad diet and I hate to use the word diet as diet is nothing more than a buz word. You need low sugar nutrition with proper vitamins and minerals. Im not talking about some super low carb keto thing either, just normal plain foods not processed or fried. If you cant harvest it or kill it you shouldn't eat it. Do that for a year even without the gym you will be on a great path and hopefully a better quality of life as a result. As you start feeling better you will naturally gravitate to a more active lifestyle dont over push it as it takes time. Pushing it physically causes injury and that will lead to failure on both activity level then nutrition.

If I made someone a plate and sprinkled the chemical ingredients I can’t pronounce and preservatives of junk food on it, Id get arrested for poisoning them or even shot. It’s ok in a Debbie Snack though.
