Just a quick question that is probably irrelevant - - -> In the hunting environment, what kind of rest(s) will be available for that "magical" 600yd shot ?? --- SAWMAN

LOL, before the internet a man that could shoot a 4 inch or less group at 300 yards was legendary. These days everyone on the net can do better than that, with factory ammunition. No need for those fancy hand loads . ;)

hood of the truck is generally good for 600...can be a little hard to load the bipod...truck bed is good on high ground...easier to load the bipod prone too.

not sure I would try it with a mini 30 either

Guys, I’ve never shot anything beyond 100 yards. I just pulled the 600 yard number out of my a** because it was mentioned early in this thread so I ran with it. I don’t even have anywhere to practice beyond 100 yards right now. Like I said earlier, I’m an equivalent to a 5 year old in this area right now, but we all start somewhere. I wouldn’t take a long shot on an animal without being sure of my abilities.

that's the thing....it is really an outta the ass goal. If you consistently maintain a less than 1 MOA error at your 100 yard target you will most likely maintain the same error at 600. Once you have a better grasp on environmental factors you will be fine. Once you clean out the limits of your mind that is :)

I see no need to beat someone up about the distances they hunt. I find a contact shot with a pistol just as exciting as a 600 yard shot.

I agree with Jester. Your shot is your decission.
More than likely you will be alone.
More than likely you will have time to "ponder" the shot and its implications..
FOR ME - -> re. deer, bear, and moose - -> a 540yd deer was the only shot I have ever taken over ABOUT 400-425 or so.
Killed plenty of chucks and yotes though, using my 220Swift and a Weatherby MK V Accumark chambered in 30-378 Wby Mag >600yds.(Even a deer 3 clubs over)
My (personal) definition of a long shot is >600yds. A shot farther than that on any game animal,I would need/want a bench and bags.

I have a "hood of my truck" bag that is kept behind the drivers seat of my past and present truck.
Used to use a Harris but found this bag to be more stable and no adjustments needed.
Killed many animals with it and burned several truck hood paint jobs with it. Now just throw an old towel under the muzzle end.
Last kill was with my Ruger #1,45-70,350gr, at about 85yds. --- SAWMAN

I used the Mini-30 Cold Bore & Group Photo to emphasis the extreme spread, I have no other rifle with such a discrepancy between cold clean bore and multiple round grouping. Yet the Mini-30 will handle actual game out to 150 yards which I consider to be the max range for the 154 HP 7.62 x 39 mm.

While it is a fact that most folks are alone when making the decision to pull the trigger, at least practice the shot you intend to attempt afield until you are proficient on paper. If you haven't performed or perfected a shot on paper, definitely don't try it afield on actual game animals. Perfect practice makes perfect, or at least gives you an informed idea of what the nut behind the butt is actually able to accomplish. It still seems like there are allot of game animals suffering a slow death because the person that should have harvested them over rated thier ability. When in doubt use the max point blank range as max range instead of as a guide. If the rifle/cartridge combo can't keep your round on the game animal, it's going to take allot of practice to outshoot your firearm. JMHO.

I love this - -> "He was running full out at 200yds and I shot him through the neck because I didn't want to ruin any meat".

I am not a hunter but I do get out and shoot steel out to 600+yards with a .308 at element in holt. I enjoy the challenge it poses.

But if harvesting an animal is the intent, I personally feel that is way to far. You are going to need to recover the animal so might as well get closer, to ensure you drop it and have an easier time tracking it down if it runs a little. Don’t want to injury it but never recover.

But if shooting steel is your thing and you want to reach out past 1000yards. The 6.5creed does have higher bc, and can stay supersonic a little further with factory loads. IF you never intend on going past 600 .308 is more readily available and the barrel will last much longer.

    My .02. Cents

He was running flat out at 100 yards and I shot him in the shoulder and blew out his heart because I didn’t want him to get away

Only one I’ve ever neck shot was about 25 yards. If you’re not sure of one shot one kill let him go

Track Soup Recipe: Bring 3 quarts water with with a pinch of salt and drop of Virgin Olive Oil to a boil. Add tracks, continue stirring until spouse quits laughing.

Complimentary side dishes are a Double helping of Crow, and a Dessert of Humble Pie. LOL.

How much Cold Air is in a Sub-Zero freezer filled with Game Harvested at or over 600 yards?

    That's an easy one...

It has the same amount of Cold Air in a Sub-Zero filled with game harvested at 100 yards

    Best left for other critters.
Me and a buddy killed 47 in one small town (3A) with our 22's
Like chucks,we were gonna drop them down the holes. Guide sez NO. Leave on top for the critters. Most likely hawks, owels, yotes, badgers, etc, etc.
Next AM fairly early we went back to the 3A town to take a look.
Not a single dead dog left. All gone. --- SAWMAN

    Critters do like free lunches.

The recipe I got for Arizona includes directions to an Italian Restaurant that serves a 1 lb Pizza-Burger on the route back to Fort Huachuca. LOL.
