You notice his boots dont have any tread on them, at all? I wonder if he did that on purpose. The movie "The Hunted" showed how this was good training popular with SpecOps stalkers.

The Rung Sat is not bad when you are young and HS/LD. But the Escambia River backwater swamp is worse when you are overweight, old,a have "injuries". ---- SAWMAN

One of the benefits of surviving The RSSZ, you get to surrender to Good Times & Gravity. But being Old & injured, (2 out of 3 ain't bad) the extra pound & 1/2 between the SOCOM16 & the Ruger Scout Rifle will be felt more with each passing mile afield than it used to! Yet I already have the Hawkeye Guide Gun, so pew pew pew without throwing a bolt or repositioning the stock? Guess the question is: will a scout rifle spend more time on the range than in the field? If its fun on the range there is more time in a year to be there than time License Hunting.

Several of the most important factors of a scout are easy to carry, accurate, powerful, and easy to feed.
Cooper later talked about a light scout but was always concerned with a good power factor.

    UH-1/UH-60/C-2/C130/P-2/P-3/A-3.
Bailed out of A-3's, egress on all the others was semi-voluntary. LOL.

Part of that could be influenced by the USMC Known Distance Rifle Course of Fire used at that time? The USMC clung to the 500 yard KD Course for Basic instruction long after the other Branches of the Military abandoned it. (XM-3 DARPA Rifle)

Good article. I love how they were slated for destruction but eventually the CMP sold them to us and now they're worth thousands and thousands of dollars

    Not gonna consider the Steyr?

Steyr's are nice, and the original based on Copper's concept. Yet Jack O'Conner had a concept for a Rifleman's Rifle, and it was based on Mauser controlled round feed claw extraction. Remington has had the .308 Win Model 7 for decades. I've used it hunting on several Continent's long, long ago. It's always been less expensive to improve the accuracy of a push feed. Not to mention that Sport Springfield 03 conversions have been around even longer. So while Steyr was first to pick up on Coopers concept, ultra-light carbines in .308 Win are not a novel concept. Badger Ord has been making a detachable mag conversion for Remington 700's for a couple of decades. So the options for a Scout Rifle are pretty limitless, probably more limited by budget than anything else nowadays. So if the Steyr has a problem with the integrated bipod failing, or a feeding problem during "The Mad Minute" those probably are not fatal flaws when filling a tag during hunting season. But I due place allot of weight on a controlled round feed & claw Extraction in a hunting rifle that may be used for game with tooth & claw. Just a belt & suspenders knee jerk reaction I guess.

That M1A SOCOM, is that the same one that Sawman inquired about the non-collapsible stock? Do you think I'm going to get flak if I require a maintenance & round count log prior to purchase. If I purchase it new from Shooters in JAX I can even perform my anal break in procedures and document my own logs. Some things are more comforting than the initial outlay in dollars even if that don't make sense (cents) speaking strictly in price point. I've found that it costs more to make a firearm preform to my standards repairing/replacing items damaged or abused by the original owner than purchasing the firearm at Manufactures price. YMMV. Is there some form of collectors value to that SOCOM 16 that I'm not aware of?

as a PS: Gunny Hathcock accomplished all he did with just one Bolt Action Rifle. Winchester Model 70 in 30-06. Everything else wasn't a Winchester Bolt Action.

So I hope my opinions have not been so strong as to irk anyone. The M1A SOCOM 16 probably doesn't create as much question because certain calibers invoke mental images of thier classic rifles. Examples: 30-06 M1 Garand or Springfield 03, 5.56 M16/AR 15,
    7.62 x 39 AK or SKS. etc....
So 7.62 x 51/.308 Win invokes the image of the M14. Obviously, to Me, Mauser & Bolt Action invoke similar mental images. If my opinions have been so strong as to offend anyone, I apologize.

So I get it. Scout Rifle is Iconic to Steyr & Cooper.

    Does 7 x 57 make anyone else think of W. D. Bell?
