I got this from my dad recently, who got it when my grandpa died last November. I don’t know much about it, aside from it is a double barrel muzzleloader and on top, between the barrels, it says, “Laminated Fine Twist.” If you can tell me anything about it, I would really appreciate it.

Have you taken it apart to see if there are any markings on the bottom of the barrel or on the backside of the lockplate?

IF you find any markings list them. Would help in narrowing it down some.

That does look pretty close, thank you! I’m going to have to disassemble and see if I can find some more markings.

I was a little intimidated about removing the barrel, but it was very simple. I was excited to find some markings, but I don’t know what any of them mean. Here’s a picture.

Looks like British proofs to me. I'll see if I can't decipher them.

I found something that looks pretty darn close. Looks to be British, Birmingham 1813-1904. What do you think?

Yes the Crown over the Crossed Scepters with the V is a Birmingham proof mark. This mark was used from 1813 to 1904.

    You have the following:

Crown over Crossed Scepters with a B C P: Birmingham definitive black powder proof for shotguns.

Crown over Crossed Scepters with a V: Birmingham view mark.

Crown over BP: Birmingham provisional proof for barrels, which I agree yours looks like the 1855 to 1868 style proof.

    14: Bore size.....

Here's a good chart for comparison, again I agree with 1855 to 1868 style proof.

Just double crown over crossed pikes and single crown over BP and the digits 14.

You might need to join a vintage BP forum and see if they can narrow it down to a makers style.

I would then take all the information and do up a letter, that documents all the markings and their meanings and the known history and line of ownership for future generations.

I've have or had an old Iver Johnson shotgun that has been owned by 5 generations now. So the letter with it has all the names from my Great Grandfather down to my son who owns it now.

The reason I say to do this, is the history becomes lost due to not being documented.

Definitely a good idea - along with everything else you know about where it came from, who owned it, etc.

I’m ahead of you on this one. I use pocket sized little notebooks and record the serial number and history of heirloom type things.
