My dogs with some backsliding allow the cat to live. There is no way they would share their food with a skunk. They are not so good sharing with one another.

30 YR AGO.. I had a ch bullterrier bitch that threw the best female in usa at the time... SHE was very game.. Very Smart...BUT ,,STUPID STUBBORN. very STRONG but WHILE willing to hunt.. LOUSY at it.. No instinct for the kill or fight. She got terribly messed up by small game. Now she would pull me on my 500lb around the block screaming to work more. And then Not catch anything worth a shit... she was a dumb hunter ,,too stiff in body...SLOW AS FUK.. ect. I have had game bred Pitbulls since.. discerning, trainable,Smarter,Faster, Lesss stubborn. Catch and Kill smallgame, medium game/pigs WITH NO DAMAGE. ..IMO bull terriers are SAD ...destroying function for LOOKS.. That's like a movie star fighter,,they Look It but Aren't It..ala,SYLVERSTER STALLONE.. who can't hit a lick in reality...AND THEY HAVE MANY CONGENITAL PROBLEMS.. bt's do.. skin ,hearing STUPID STUBBORN.

On a per lb basis I think that the smaller terriers are the real killers of the dog world.

i am sure they are good companions.
Their ancestors probably were not used that much in bullbaiting. They were used for fighting other dogs and some types of hunting. Initially just any dog would used in bullbaiting, but with time they came smaller with a body like a pit bull and a normal skull, but shortened jaws.
Rosa and Crib, two well known dogs of the 1830's used in bull baiting

A modern farm bulldog that I own. She is about 68 lbs. She is not from the line of dogs that were used for bull baiting in England.

I know several breeders of PATTERDALE TERRIERS... To a man they tell me their little 15lb demons would kill any 35 lb boar coon. lb for lb I would have to agree...

The patteredales and the closely related German jag terrier do have that reputation. When cat dies I may replace her with either a jag terrier or a minpin. I do not want to pay too much because there is a good chance they will tangle with a water moccasin. My other dogs instinctively avoid them them.

I had a little game bred Pitbull female...40lb house fat... killed and ate at least 15 cats while I had her.... she stalked prey like a cat. Hid behind trees or in bush's by my privacy fence.. if necessary to catch squirrels ,cotton tails and believe in or not..SHE CAUGHT 2 JACK RABBITS. Only one big tom managed to scratch the tip of her ear. Unfortunately She loved killing skunks and spent many a night in garage soaked in tomatoe juice while in dog crate. I could Not stop her. sheeeesh..

a friend really likes the jagd terriers,,likes their Nose. He crossed one with a racing whippet... the cross could hit 35mph easy. caughts rabbits on the fly easy.. weighed 35lb tall HARD and had a great nose. I almost bought it from him. Was a good housepet as well...He is a trapper by trade and Courser with home brew stags n stuff...

Well, I'm sorry you had a bad Bull Terrier experience. They are bred specially to be companion animals, they are not even considered to be outdoor dogs. I have 2 and I doubt if they'd chase a cat. They do keep a good eye on my property and that's all I ask of them other than to keep us company. I have no doubt Pitbulls are much better hunters. The number of dead and maimed people that they stack up every year is certainly a tribute to their hunting abilities. Sometimes due diligence is a virtue, we should all use some occasionally.
