I am trying to understand what is real, versus we always did it that way, versus this is scientific fact ..concerning the proper / improper way to clean a gun barrel..
Growing up, cleaning a gun meant shoving an aluminum rod tipped with a brass brush up and down the barrel generally from the business end since it was the easiest.. not sure if we ever damaged things back then but of course we were not dealing with match grade barrels or anything like that..
Nowadays it seems we take great pains to only brush from the reciever end out , never back and forth , and may be instructed to use plastic brushes versus bronse , plastic coated wire or even a cloth bore snake.. all in the interests of not causing any damage to rifle / pistol bore..
After doing all this we then fire multiple projectiles down said barrel at speeds of 700 to 3000 fps followed by a flame front , unburnt powder etc..
What i find hard to believe is that by simply pushing or pulling a bronze brush through a barrel at speeds of 2? fps is in anyway more detrimental to the gun than it is to fire it..
I know that how things are done today "seem" to make sense.. but then why would we ever subject our prized match grade , air gauged barrel to sending a round down it.. if improper cleaning can hose it up?..
