Sorry but when I was a kid in the 50s that's pretty much the way it was. Most women did not work and especially did not if there were kids.
Most women did not earn a paycheck. They still worked. (But I do know what you meant to say). If my grandfather had said half of that stuff to my grandmother, she would have killed him, and mounted his head on the wall. My Mom, who was a judge, would have simply had my Dad put on death row.
