Subject: Reason for the Electoral College

Reading Flexner’s biography of Washington I understood the reason for the Electoral College, the Colonies simply didn’t trust each other. The less populated ones didn’t want to be outvoted. Therefore the compromise. It makes sense.

    The Electoral College

In their infinite wisdom, the United States’ founders created the Electoral College to ensure the STATES were fairly represented. Why should one or two densely populated areas speak for the whole of the nation?

The following list of statistics has been making the rounds on the Internet. It should finally put an end to the argument as to why the Electoral College makes sense.

There are 3,141 counties in the United States.

    Trump won 3,084 of them.

    Clinton won 57.

There are 62 counties in New York State.

    Trump won 46 of them.

    Clinton won 16.

Clinton won the popular vote by approx. 1.5 million votes.

In the 5 counties that encompass NYC, (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Richmond & Queens) Clinton received well over 2 million more votes than Trump. (Clinton only won 4 of these counties; Trump won Richmond)

Therefore these 5 counties alone, more than accounted for Clinton winning the popular vote of the entire country.

These 5 counties comprise 319 square miles.

The United States is comprised of 3,797,000 square miles.

When you have a country that encompasses almost 4 million square miles of territory, it would be ludicrous to even suggest that the vote of those who inhabit a mere 319 square miles should dictate the outcome of a national election.

Large, densely populated cities (NYC, Chicago, LA, etc) DO NOT and SHOULD NOT speak for the rest

Yep. The OP is a simple cut and paste from a "FW:FW:FW:FW:FW:FW:FW: WOW CHECK THIS OUT!!!!" type email.

Apparently there are still a lot of people that get their "news" this way, supplemented by a healthy dose of Facebook.

However, even foreign media organizations know that this information is false and misleading.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...tbart-map-explained-how-trumps-dominance-acr/

Its truly amazing to see grown adults hop all over this stuff time and again, without making any effort whatsoever to check its veracity.

If you are interested in stats on the presidential election, you can Google results by state.

The info can be downloaded in text/excel format.

The info is interesting with respect to who won what states, and by how much.

Removes some of the internet facts and fiction.

The numbers in the OP may not be totally correct but as they say a picture tells a thousand words.

Yes, the founders were brilliant. Don't let the felons, minorities, liars and idiots who congregate in the cities control the country. Let the real Americans who make this country work be responsible for the direction we take. Unfortunately even such a great system doesn't always work. Just look at what happened in 2008 and 2012. Like they say never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups...

Right. Who needs all that fancy reading, riting and rithmetic stuff anyways? All that book learning stuff is for stupid people. A smart guy can learn all he needs to know about the world by simply looking at some picture drawings.

It is usually futile to try to talk facts and analysis to people who are enjoying a sense of moral superiority in their ignorance

I try to make it simple so even libs can understand, but I guess even at that it's too much for certain people to grasp...

Well, liberalism is a mental disorder...but it's a condition that is exacerbated by being a condescending, arrogant douchebag.

I know it is. I read it in an email that was forwarded to me.

The US is a Democratic Republic....the Democrats (majority rules) the Republicans (equal representation)...the House and the Senate, respectively. The 17th amendment changed the way senators were appointed...moving from appointment by the state's legislatures to as popular, national vote. On that day the republic took a big negative step backwards. The eletcoral college is another "representative" institution and if you value your way of life, think verrry carefully about advocating for elimination of the electoral college.

Democracy fails when the majority oppress the minority...as is sure to happen over time. California, New York and Illinois would dominate our lives....see ya AR-15's, 30 round magazines, heck...guns altogether eventually. Unfunded mandates such as Obamacare would not have passed before the 17th amendment...most states actually balance their budget and all programs must be funded before becoming law in that scenario. Our opportunity to better ourselves would evaporate before our eyes as there would be a 'ruling class' and us peasants....don't you find it interesting that some of the most horrible places on earth have elections too...but still they are crummy places to live...far worse than choosing between a career criminal in Hillary and a bombastic businessman in Trump.

As always, be careful what you wish for as you might get it!

five longtime Democrat empires (all days are consecutive and uninterrupted):
    1. St. Louis: only Democrat mayors; 90% Democrat City Council; 15,000 days.
    2. Baltimore: only Democrat mayors and only Democrat City Council; 18,000 days.
    3. Philadelphia: only Democrat mayors; 90% Democrat City Council; 20,000 days.
    4. Detroit: only Democrat mayors; 90% Democrat City Council; 22,000 days.
    5. And the great Democrat beacon on the hill, Chicago: only Democrat mayors; 90% Democrat City Council; 30,000 days.
The Democrats have ruled Chicago for longer than Stalin ruled the USSR, the Castros in Cuba, and the Kims in North Korea, and for longer than slavery was legal in the U.S.

these cities are such lovely places today.....insert dripping sarcasm icon here

    All hail the Republic!!

Seriously though; The Republic is what keeps the coasts from telling "flyover" country how to live their lives. Unfortunately, it doesn't work the same way in the coastal States. Central CA/OR/WA is quite a bit different than San Fran/Portland/Seattle. For all the sound bites that ask "don't we live in a democracy?".... No. Thankfully.

The OP may have some wrong numbers (snopes/Google will help to check your "facts") but I'd say the intent is correct. If the popular vote is what won elections, the campaigning would be significantly different and the candidates wouldn't ever bother the Midwest.

Politics are stupid. Either side is going to bitch about the thing they think made them lose ( electoral college, "nuclear option", gerrymandering, late night legislation, "jamming" bills through) until they can take advantage of it themselves.

i think the Electoral College is a good thing, precisely because it gives the less populous states a voice. However, it does give a disproportionate amount of power to "swing states". But no system is perfect.

The one major change that I would like see is an elimination of the primaries. The end result of a party primary is we get candidates who are more extreme (either to the left or right) than the majority of the population. I would rather have no primaries, just a general election - throw everyone on the ballot and if no one candidate wins the 51% of the electoral votes then have a run off between the two leading candidates (regardless of party affiliation) . I believe then we would get leaders who are more moderate and who are more beholding to the public and less beholding to their party or their big money supporters. Also this system might give independents a better shot at competing.

True words. In Florida, districts are redrawn every 10 years - following the census.

For decades, yes decades, the majority party in the legislature has drawn the districts. Only recently has there been cries of fowl over the majority party having too much influence over the configuration of these districts.

Cries of gerrymandering and calls for a 'nonpartisan ' group to draw districts in a 'fair' manner are now heard.
