Have been living in the middle of nowhere up in the Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee for four months now. I have been warned by the locals to watch out for bears. They will sometimes snoop around occupied cabins for food. We don't leave any garbage outside for that reason. Anyway, I have an old, but really nice Remington M141 in .35 Remington. It has a peep sight, and is very light weight and fast handling. I think it would be a great bear deterrent. I hope that I would never have to actually shoot an intruding bear, but if there was no other way, I would not hesitate. Some might say that a large caliber handgun might be a better choice, but I personally don't care for handguns. I have nothing against them, they are just not my thing. I think a .35 Remington would dispatch a bear rather quickly if it had to be done.
