A buddy in another group had his ID ripped off and the perp opened a checking account and then got an online payday loan which of course he didn't pay back.

LSS, he is dealing with all sorts of legal problems including a warrant and has to pay the loan back as of now. Real BS.

Does anybody have any idea how this could be prevented, short of never ever been online? Would a credit freeze have stopped it?

I intend to call my FCU today and ask, sure seems like there should be a way to prevent this kind of life altering occurrence.

I reciently had my credit frozen with the 3 credit checkers. Its a good move if you are a senior .And dont plan on any big ticket loans in the future ! You can always unfreeze it for a one time purchase etc.

I like Clark Howard too and get his daily newsletter. One thing I would add to the credit freeze subject is that if you're planning to get your once-a-year free AnnualCreditReport, to do so before freezing your credit. It'll save you some hassle.

I called Clack's team and my credit union yesterday and freezing your credit report seems to be the best way to avoid this. Going to call them today. Clark also suggested opening a free Credit Karma account to keep track of your report.

My fcu said they check the credit report before opening an account but she wasn't sure about others. But with frozen credit that should prevent any payday loans.

    Thanks for the input guys.

Glad you were able to get the issue taken care of Rick.

I've thought for a long time about getting something like that Life Lock service, but I also plan to freeze my credit. I'm not sure if doing one would make doing the other redundant.

After the big Equifax breech announced a few months ago I went to their potential impact link and got some wishy-washy answer to the effect of "it is uncertain at this time if your personal information was impacted by this incident", or something like that. But they haven't (yet) sent me a written notice, which they're supposed to do for those affected.

Life Lock is a Joke. I would not waist my money on it.

Thanks Ken. Besides the plethora of TV commercials it's also pushed by AAA and the NRA, but I don't personally know anyone who has it so I had no one to ask about it. I appreciate your input, and think I'll just go with the freeze.

Can't go wrong with the freeze... No reason to pay a company by the month when you can pay one time and be done with it.

Wasn't me Ross, it was a buddy from another expensive hobby group. It was just a wake up call for me. I've known I should freeze my credit for a while, just too lazy to do it. No longer !
