My wife’s uncle has a 1977 Colt Ar-15 that he bought new in 1978. He wants to sell it. He really did only fire about two mags through it, then stuck it under his bed. Said it’s wht made him realize he needed glasses. Pretty sure he cleaned it though. He’s a very detail oriented engineer. Just looking for a ballpark figure to put him on the right path. Sadly, he lives up in Michigan and I actually like him or I’d tell him it’s only worth a couple hundred and I’d have another caliber to collect.

No doubt its a SP-1 model, no forward assist, three prong FH, the pencil thin barrel. Don't see a lot of these around, made when only Colt was making ARs.

My guessimate would be the same a FLTs, maybe a tad more if it has pristine box, original mags, ect.

I don’t know, I’ve seen some crazy asking prices for the older SP-1s.
Yes, I know people can ask anything they want to but generally people don’t ask double what things are worth.
You probably need to look at Armslist and Gunbroker.
    I’m betting it’s closer to $1,500.

You're looking at about $1500 for an excellent condition SP1. EASY sale at $1250 or so.

The trouble with Gunbroker is you have to ship it. I dislike shipping , so I guess I'll be getting local sales prices for mine. There are just way to many things that can go wrong when you are shipping a gun.

Condition is everything, FLT, if yours is like OP describes, you can expect top dollar for the market you sell in. However, prices can vary depending on the condition, going to no lower than $1k. For GunBroker, the key is insurance and a competent FFL to ship, it's your money though. Good luck to you guys.
PM tackleberryMC for more detailed info, the man knows his ARs.

You're not going to get top dollar in the local market.

GB may be a little bit more hassle but your likely to get a much better sale price and you're going to go out to a much larger audience. Their fees are relatively low and you can make the buyer pay any shipping fees. You can legally ship a longarm through the PO to their receiving FFL(just because you can, doesn't mean it's an easy process. Not all PO employees know the rules. Depending on where you're shipping and the weight, shipping can be as low as $15 but will get upwards of $40 for the west coast. Insurance bumps that up some.

Personally, I think the return on the GB sale would be worth the effort instead of having a bunch of locals low balling you and offering to trade their walmart Rem 700 and $200.

FedEx is easiest if not going through FFL on the originating end (you'll have to on receiving, and present a copy), but they'll want to overnight it. And you'll have to go to W street.

Yeah . . . Nate is right. You probably should not do buisness with "a bunch of locals". All they ever do is offer what they think the firearm is worth . . . NOT what you think it's worth. ---- SAWMAN

I agree with Nate and Dan. Gunbroker is the way to go with anything unusual or collectible.
You need an audience of collectors to get top $.
By all means come up with a price that’s acceptable to you and place an ad on here but be prepared to go to Gunbroker.

Maybe the OP and Sawman can come to an agreement on pricing?

I don't have any trouble selling here , I've had 4 forum members drive 2 hours to meet up for a sale. But then I'm not trying to make a living off selling guns either. To each his own. And may you have much success in your gun broker dealings.
