    Moved to the reloading section.

I don't know about others, but I'm not willing to load ammo for anyone else. Way too much of a liability.

What's so special about the bullets you're buying?

IIRC, FFL's have to have a special permit to manufacture them and can only sell to Gov and LE agencies.

Be careful if you do find anyone to load them for you. It only takes an incremental change in powder charge and/or a couple thousandth's of an inch to make an overpressure round that could cause serious damage to both a firearm and the shooter.

5.56 Black Tips ??? Can't recall ever seeing any of them.
    What would they do that a M855 wouldn't do ??? --- SAWMAN

    Found this on another site...

US military M995 AP 5.56 has a black tip and uses a hardened tungsten carbide core. This ammo cost more than $2/round when M855 cost $.12/round, and is only available to the military as a special-request item and only in SAW belts. In most cases, its use is restricted to SpecOps. None has ever been surplussed, and no projectiles are available. Outside of a tiny quantity that could have been smuggled out by active-duty troops, we will likely never see this ammo available on the civilian market.

M855 "green tip" ammo is considered "standard" or "ball" ammo by the military. It features a mild-steel penetrator in the tip to increase hard target penetration at longer ranges vs. M193, but is NOT considered AP ammo and does not perform well enough to meet that classification.

Note that some non-US-made M855-type ammo (Igman "Hotshot") comes with black-painted tips, and some ammo dealers at gun shows try (often successfully) to pass this off as being true AP, but it isn't.

My understanding from reading, besides the questionable legality, is that even with a tungsten carbide penetrator, it still isn't that great of a penetrator, because of the relatively small mass.

For the price of a single stage press and some components, you won't be out too much money if you're interested in making "custom" rounds.

As Drosh sez in his above. You still need momentum. I believe this is why there is a speed vs weight thing going on with the 62gr M855. In a true AP round, the 30cals would be much mo-bedda. 50cal better and 20 and 30mm even better. --- SAWMAN

I've seen black tip 556 in the military, and I guess I'll ask. Why do you need an AP round like that? Just curious why go thru all the trouble for an AP round in 556? They don't go thru that much more than 855A1, seen best use out of belt feds creating a beat zone. To each his own of course I'm just wondering what the application would be.

I've seen some 855A1 bullets available in small quantities, few and far between. Anyone else see them available consistently anywhere?
