So does anyone have a complete AK parts kit they plan building? Of all my friends that are into guns, I only know of one that has anything to do with building AK's or other rifles. Just curious if anyone on this forum does it or is sitting on a couple kits and saving them for a rainy day. I'm considering selling more of my guns off so I can seriously look into another AK or 2. On the fence about building at least one. Same deal on an AR.

If I had the knowledge to do so I would build one off a Childers receiver. Unfortunately parts kits are way up there where you can pretty much buy the complete rifle for just a little bit more. By the time you get the build tools and gauges, rivets, parts, etc it will be a labor of love for sure. If we ever get a big import of parts kits that drive down the prices then investment in the tools would be worth it and the knowledge of putting together and AK from scratch would be invaluable.
I'm in trade talks now with a guy about a Chinese AK and seems like a good guy to deal with, just gotta find a common trade ground. Hope it pans out as I have never had a Chinese variant and am curious. Looks like a nice rifle.
I have built a few ARs by now if you ever need help let me know Joe. Once you do it once you will build a couple more just for the heck of it I'm sure. Time to buy parts for ARs is now for sure.

Any of you AK fanboys have experience with a MAK90? I just recently came to own one and just looking as to what all you guys have done to em or your experiences with the ol Chinese Mak90. Have not fired it yet but have been on the look out for an AKM type and I hear you can't go wrong with AKs built on foreign receivers so I figured why not.
Anyhow any Mak90 owners please feel free to chime in your experiences

Eh. I keep mine in the safe with all the other guns I never shoot

Glad to see you pick it up. I was pretty tempted even though I already have one. I find the thumb-hole look refreshing, and you know, wont be any more Chinese guns for the foreseeable future.

yep the fact that its Chinese drew me to it. It wasn't the one in for sale section though. This one has American wood, also straight cut and threaded muzzle. So def something I was interested in. Love the nice deep Norinco engraving on the receiver and the finish is blued instead of park. Cant wait to wring it out a big and see how she goes. Ended up doing a good trade for both parties and the guys was more than friendly. All told ended up with the rifle 9 mags, 450rds, sling and extra grip for the items I traded him. Win win for all.

I'm jealous! I have a 56S already but I still would like a gun that I can take to the range and not worry about something happening to it. Mine is very nice and wasn't shot much. Same deal on an SA85M. Have the preban under folder but want a post ban to shoot and convert. Maadi too because the Steyr imports are $$$$! Post ban model would be perfect. I plan to build 1 or 2 AR's just for fun. Much rather spend my time, money and energy on obtaining an SP1 than building one. I'm a collector that still likes to enjoy them and shoot occasionally. Some more than others. Just never planned on getting this involved in guns. Once upon a time I was a car guy but haven't turned a wrench or even looked at my cars in a couple years. Funny how things can change with time...

Yeah I am there with ya Joe, I was a car guy too, did a couple of restomods. Then changed to knives for a while, still enjoy them and have a few nice ones. Did the sportbike, then the touring bike thing. Did the watch thing which I still enjoy but they are more expensive than guns most of the time. Now its mostly family time, guns and video games. Well that and work which no one can get around I guess. You have a nice Chinese selection going, very cool. I would absolutely love to own a Chinese Spiker or a Maadi.
Have you looked at Two River Arms? They have Iraqi Tobuk remakes that look the part pretty well. Based off yugo m70 models, they re-work them to early Iraqi Army config. Waiting to hear back from them on turn around time and prices. Only interested cause I did a little time there so why not have an example of an Iraqi one, I have my Afghani project already underway.
Youtube, gunsmiths of dara pakistan. Vice has a good doc and there are others. Pretty interesting. They can sure make them look the part, I just wonder about the longevity of them. I would like to see what the typical round count you can get out of theirs.
The ones I have had the pleasure of confiscating or otherwise picking up next to bodies have been some cool examples. Have not seen one stateside that can compare to the real deal pick ups over there. Izzy, Tulas, AKMs, sanitized ones, all sorts of cool ones. Some with trunnion marks as early as the 50s. Wish this generation of GI could bring stuff back like previous ones. But eh,

A little AK porn from some of our favorite rifles encountered in Iraq.

Ok so my soviet afghan war clone is done. Looks and shoots great. But I'm not one to leave well enough alone so I'm getting a quality receiver sent. Who wants to try to build an AK?

I do. I would love to. It doesn't even have to be nice looking. I don't care if the parts are all from different countries. The problem I have is most (all?) of the parts kits I see out there now are really expensive. Like you said earlier, for a few dollars more you could get a complete rifle. I would love to barter to get what I need but there are not many people in the market for M249 barrels, large ammo cans, and what-not. Maybe one of these days. If you have some miscellaneous AK parts, not even a complete kit, I would be willing to barter or negotiate a price.

So I got a quote from an FFL licensed gunsmith in Tampa of $150 to swap my 74 onto a new Childers receiver. I think that sounds pretty reasonable no? Guy advertises that he specializes in FAL and AKs. 40 some years experience. I think I may give it a go. Everyone I called round here either won't do it or I don't trust them with a slingshot.

Well if anyone has a press and the knowledge I am ready for a receiver swap. Should be pretty straight forward, just gotta get those trunnion holes drilled and try to make some good rivet work lol. If anyone wants to build or experiment let me know.
In the meantime if anybody needs their barrels threaded to 14x1LH let me know. If my die holds up I am more than happy to help ya thread a barrel for the price of nothing. Just wanna have a good time with like minded firearms enthusiasts.

First attempt at threading. Turned out clean and simple. If anyone needs a hand threading to 14x1LH on an AK for a muzzle device, let me know, I'll help ya out.

Who is the smith that quoted you for the receiver swap? Just wondering. Also, do you have the detent for your muzzle device installed? Can't really tell from the pic - if not make sure ya do, don't wanna send your muzzle device downrange :)

Gonna have to use a crush washer for now till I can get the front pin of the sight post out. It is just not budging with the punches I have on hand. Put yeah I plan to put a detent spring and pin there to finish it up. Intents on muzzle devices line up very close, so once I get the detent in there there should be very little wobble.
I'll pm you the info of the smith I am thinking of using.
