I just picked up a Rem 700 in 223 that came with a no-name scope i would like to replace it with "decent" glass 150-200$ budget.. Eventually i would like to put it in a magpul hunter stock.
Thanks i have never owned quality glass so i dont really have a frame of reference.
Something along the lines of a 4-12 x 42-44 maybe.
I would prefer mil dot reticle and finger adjustable turrets also.

$200 won't buy you quality glass. Sorry.
Rem 700 in 223 would be a lot of fun though.

Vortex and Burris make entry level stuff, but I've heard mixed reviews, especially with Vortex.
For the price, I like Nikon, and their ballistic app is fantastic.

Check out the Nikon Prostaff for "decent" glass. I agree with the others that you need to spend more if you want "quality" glass. But Vortex and Nikon Prostaff linup can get you something decent.

Look for used if you can and you can usually save a little.

"Good" and "quality" are unbelievably subjective.
$500 would be bottom of the barrel for good glass. Vortex Viper is a good place to start.

As a rule of thumb, spend as much on glass as the gun itself.

For the money it seems to be. I would check other sites like OpticsPlanet or Jet for a better price. Also Mrgunsngear Youtube channel does quite a few primary arms scope reviews. Good luck with the search.

Just like most glass, Vortex has entry up to decent dollar stuff. I have about 5 Vortex and love em.

First question.... what are your plans for this rifle? As in what kind of range/scenario do you plan on shooting?

Mostly just plinking at the range (ERGC) I may try my hand a reloading ammo if I get a chance to shoot farter than 158 yrds.. then I will see how far I can get, I have never owned a "percision rifle" so.. I picked it up so I would have something that shoots the same ammo as my AR, but was a little more percise. If I like it I am pretty sure I can re barrel it to a different SA caliber I.E 308, 7mm-08, 6.8 etc..

This has been the rule I try to follow. If I can't spend at least the purchase price of the gun on optics, I save up a little longer!

I've tried going the "cheaper" route and I always end up replacing it eventually and in the long run spending more than I would have if I'd just bought the "good" stuff the first time around.

Lower end scopes just end up loosing zero, fogging up, broken cross hairs, recoil beating them up and just plain breaking in some shape or form.

The cheapest scope I have now is the Nikon Prostaff, and it's holding up so far. But for hunting in low light, there's just no reason to waste money on a "cheap" scope if you want those last light shots.
