Novice with some questions about best uses/purposes for scopes.

I am considering putting a scope on my AR-15 and moving my red dot to the 1 o'clock position. I also have a 30-06 rifle that came with a Nikon SA 3-9X40 scope.

I was originally going to buy a 3-9X40 scope for the AR, but then I thought if I would be better off moving the 30-06's existing scope to my AR, and then getting something even nicer for the 30-06. I figured a 3-9x would be sufficient for the AR given that round's inherent range limitations, whereas the 30-06 could take advantage of a bigger magnification/longer range scope.

    1) Is this a good idea in general?
    2) Is the Nikon SA 3-9X40 suitable for an AR?
    3) Any other suggestions or ideas given these circumstances?

If any other info is needed from me for consideration, please let me know, thanks!

    Define your "circumstances"
What do you use your AR for?

    Second.
Also, what type/brand of red dot do you currently have?

Circumstances - Outside of general range usage and self defense, for lack of a better description I'd say its primary purpose is for prepping... Just being ready for SHTF. Specifically for the AR, I guess I am trying to make it as versatile as possible. That being said, if the answer is a scope isn't really necessary and the red dot is enough, then that is fine.

Red dot - Aimpoint T2. No magnification of any kind, just the red dot itself.

Solid red dot is good out to 400, but magnification does make the 200+ stuff easier.
In your situation, id stick to the red dot.
If you start either hunting or competing at 200+, grab a 1-6x or 1-8x.
However, you Nikon will work just fine in a good one piece mount, and if your definition of general range use involves shooting for groups, or you have astigmatism, it's a better option than the dot.
Me, personally, for general use, dot it.

don't guess, leave the red dot on. come shoot some two gun matches. generally 20 to 400 yards with a " defensive concept" designed into the stage. see what does and does not work for you. See what other people are running. Between Dothan gun club , core shooting center, BPSA in Biloxi. You can shoot a match involving an ar in the simulation you describe almost every weekend. Nwfdps @ Escambia river has 2 gun matches from time to time also. I would be happy to point you in the right direction to get started on shooting one.

    I'll save him the trouble.
    1-6x Vortex, FF3 offset. Boom!
You can thank me for the saved match fees. Lol
