What locally available ammo would be preffered for an m1 Garand in 30-06? I'm pretty sure most "new" loads are too hot or too slow burning for it (as says the internet) and I would rather seek advice from our locals, who I will hold accountable, hahahaha, jk.

    JJ? James?

I dont reload, hence the question for locally available ammunition to be used. Ex: Walmart, Academy, Gander, LGS, etc

edit: sorry if that sounded snappy or rude, not intended

I don't think they are available locally, but Midway USA carries four brands of ammo made specifically for the M1 Garand. They are Prvi Partizan, Sellier & Bellot, Hornady and Federal. Here is the link.

Search and you may find them cheaper elsewhere.

If you know someone who reloads 30.06, the Hornady reloading manual has loads for the M1 Garand.

Yes, the Greek 30 cal (marked HXP) is the best milsurp IMHO. I tested it against LC and it had higher MV and was more accurate, and it was from 1962.

There are some commercial rounds made for the M-1, Federal I think makes some.

Finding any at the LGS will probably not happen but the CMP still sells cans of loose Greek and Mac the Knife had a few spam cans for sale.

I think I got mac's spam cans, but he said he would have more, it has been a while, I am about ready to check with him.

For ksenter, I will sell you a sealed spam can of 240 rds of Greek M2 ball for $150. As others have said, nice stuff, made for the M1. Non corrosive, boxer primed. You pick it up. I live 5 miles north of Whiting Field. Am cleaning the workshop this morning and saw I had a can you could buy.

If you want to be able to shoot any 30.06 ammo in your Garand you can use a ported gas plug. I've used this one for several years with good success. It lowers the pressure that the op rod sees by about 30%. I've shot pretty much anything they sell at Walmart and CMP through my Garand with no ill effects. Install it and forget it.

Or if you hand load or want to shoot max effort rounds, an adjustable gas plug is also available. This one allows you to set the op rod pressure to whatever you need, 0-100%. I currently have this one in my Garand.
