In light of having my truck stolen on Friday I am on a mission to get a camera system that will monitor my driveway, front door and rear doors to my house. I'd like it to be wireless so I don't have to run cables through my attic and drill holes through the brick exterior of my house but if that is the best way to go then so be it.

Anybody have some good advice from their experience?

buy a parrot named Moses, and a Rottweiler named Jesus....

    [h=3]Jesus is watching you![/h]
A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables, and when he picked up a CD player to place in his pack, a strange, disembodied voice echoed from the dark saying, "Jesus is watching you."
He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight out, and froze. When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head, promised himself a vacation after the next big score, then clicked the light on and began searching for more valuables. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard,
"Jesus is watching you." Freaked out, he shone his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot. "Did you say that?", he hissed at the parrot.
"Yep," the parrot confessed, then squawked, "I'm just trying to warn you."
The burglar relaxed. "Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?"
    "Moses," replied the bird.
"Moses?" the burglar laughed. "What kind of people would name a bird Moses?"
"The kind of people that would name a Rottweiller Jesus."

It has been my experience that wired cameras are more reliable than a wireless. Most camera systems now are network cameras, and I would recommend (POE) power over ethernet. Lorex and flir make great night vision cams that record on movement. Good luck

I like the idea of POE system that runs over Cat 5 or 6 cable. It's easy to work with and my experience in the IT world means I'm very familiar with that technology. Now I just need to find an 8 channel system that doesn't break the bank but is still good. I noticed most systems are 720p or 1080p. I'm looking for a good deal but will pay more to make sure it's 1080p. I'll be going to Sam's club this afternoon to see what they have, my store here in town has several security camera systems on display.

Make sure you get a system that downloads to a hard drive.

Older systems used vcr or dvds. But with a vcr you can only tape 8hrs on most tapes that you can find and not positive but I think dvrs only go 12hrs. If your away for an extended time the system is useless.

With a hard-drive you get unlimited time to video.

Yes Wireless is good for certain applications and when needed but if you can get a cable to the camera run it!!!.

I have a 16 ch 2TB DVR system from REVO America. They are pretty good and provide and lifetime free DNS (Dynamic Naming Service) . For you non computer network geeks out there that means if you are on DSL, Cable etc and don't have a Static IP you can always reach your DVR by it's unique name you give it...

I am using 14 of the 16 ch's right now. It's been a pretty good system and has not let me down yet. I do have a few Wireless cameras installed but still are piped into the REVO DVR. The reason is they are in remote areas like in the workshop... etc. Everything else is wired. I also have a couple of high end PTZ Cameras (Pan Tilt Zoom) with them you have to run a cable that can transmit the Video, Power and then a two wire RS485 communication. This is for the control of the PTZ functions. You get what you pay for... Just remember this.

A little History. I started out with a system I kinda put together myself. Bought a few wireless IP Cameras setup a stand alone PC with software directly written for what I was doing. The Developer was great and worked with me If I came up with an idea to change or make it better he would make that happen.... That was a long time ago. Would I do that again probably not. There are to many pretty decent DVR systems out there nowadays.

I live next to a marine E-8. I count on him for all of my outdoor security needs.

In all seriousness, I've seen a lot of outdoor security systems at Sam's Club for great prices. They even have some hooked up so you can check for camera clarity and stuff.

If you want wireless Netgear has a great system they records by motion to a cloud and you can see them live from your phone. But I would go wired over catfive to a system that backs up to a cloud so if the system gets stolen you still have it on a cloud. I've been doing it for 15 + years and seen them come a long way in that time if it was my house hardwired cameras the recoard straight to a cloud server. I would not worry with a hard drive to record to. By all means do to record to a vcr.... We could have gotten a murder one time but the customer did not have a tape in the vcr.

Your truck was stolen? Oh MY..

There are alot of good systems out there under $1500 for 8 cams and a DVR, shop the tech stuff you know and look at the packages.

Greybar used to sell GE Color/IR wired cameras with a hard drive system for storage. I put this system in my house when I built it. I can view all the cameras on my large screen TV at anytime. Comes in handy at night when the dog is barking at something (usually rabbits, coons, or possums).

Yea we have a dedicated 26" monitor on the wall and can see all the outside cameras all the time. It stays on 24/7. I also ran cable to be able to view it on any TV in the house.

I had these guys do a full installed system with the cellular burglar alarm and 8 high def infra-red cameras.
Ask for Jeff Martin the owner. They can do all size and price systems. Well worth it and great customer service.

I'm a AF Veteran Telephone and Data Communications Specialist who spent 10 years running cables through ceilings and drilling holes through all kinds of walls to include cinder block so I have ordered a system and will do the installation myself. After the advice I found here and a lot of research online below is the system I chose to purchase. It was actually on sale for $678.

That's what I did. Installed everything myself including the Alarm System with Wireless Dialer and Camera System. The fun part is programming all the zones to meet your needs.

The DVR System has switched inputs and I programmed it... If the Alarm goes off it trips the DVR to record all at super high def. There is all kinds of stuff you can do... You can even set the PTZ cameras to move and zoom on command if needed.

I bought a system with 4 cameras to start but it has 8 channels so I can add more cameras to it as needed. The kit should arrive Friday and Anthony is coming home from Troy for the weekend. Hopefully the two of us can get it set up and at least get the two cameras setup that I want watching the driveway and the side of the house I don't have any windows I can see out of.
