Last week I was reading an article about an outdoors man in Alaska who killed an attacking Brown Bear with a 10mm hand gun. Nothing was said about the load if I remember right. Took 3 shots.

I read a story a few weeks ago about an Alaskan guide that killed a brown bear with a 9mm! Took 7 shots but it took the bear down. It started to charge 2 people he was guiding.

Bear attacks and self defense killings of bears are somewhat common up here -- especially during the Salmon run. The Cubs are old enough to explore and the sows are teaching them how to fish and find berries this time of year.

The 9mm carrying guide was lucky - way under gunned.

This guy was lucky too - an empty chamber could make the difference between death / serious injury or being unscathed. Carrying JHP ammo is not wise either for dangerous wildlife.

But, both were better than a sharp stick or a rock...

A liberal hiker might say you should just shoot him in the leg... with bear spray.

Ouch, that had to hurt but his adrenaline rush probably kept him from feeling it until after he knew the bear was dead! Yeah, I'd be carrying a large bore pistol around if I lived in Alaska!

Dan Wesson made a Brown Bear rig especially for the north country, a 4 inch 445 Super Mag in a swivel holster. Thing was ported and sported 300 gr bullets. I got to see Bob, the owner of DW demonstrate the revolver, damned it was tough in DA.
