I have all the makings to load a 1868 Springfield Trapdoor, but I need load data for smokeless powder load. I dont want to mess with the black powder.( too dirty ).

You can find data for 45/70 ,but none of my books have any 50/70 data.
If anyone has a book with 50/70 data please send me the load data...thanks...

    close please

I was going to send you the info from the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook (4th Edition) but it says their info is for modern reproduction rifles only.

Will this one work for you?

My Load Data site has tons of data for your gun. What bullet do you want to use ?? ---SAWMAN

I have a box of 515 grain bullets i got from Montana Precision Swagging. and i have a couple cans of IMR 4198, so i figured i would try that and later go to a lighter bullet for target shooting.
OR what powder would you recommend for this old gun? I also bought a mold from Midway to make my own bullets in the future 450 gn .

The loads that I have listed using IMR4198 are to be used in modern replica firearms ONLY.
I do not see any loads that fit your parameters at all. (Older weapon using IMR4198). --- SAWMAN

    Springfield model1870 Trapdoor

    I decided to go with 515gn bullet, 23gn of IMR 4198, A 1"cotton patch, OAL 2.25
It worked beautifully ,What a hoot to shoot ,It was dead on at 100yds. I sure wouldnt want to be a Buffalo at the recieving end of this round !

    223 round on right.

Im late arriving to this thread.......i'm glad you found something that worked! I have an 1884 Trapdoor in 45-70 that i have been shooting smokeless in for 25 years. My powder of choice is AA-5744. It has been great. I recommend it highly if it meets your needs. Im running a 405 LFP at 1300/fps. It will do 2" at 100 yds. Enjoy!
