Are the receives of these two different caliber AR's so different that you could not put a 5.56 upper on a 7.26x51 lower?

Maybe you were thinking of 7.62x39?

X39 is a tricky build though, with historically hit or miss reliability.

x39 is pretty reliable now with proper feed ramps and the new mags for them, most manufactures have fixed their uppers 2-3 years now. Try Hardened Arms right here in FL

    ........ snip.......

There is an existing weapon which shoots the 7.62x39 without any reliability problems........ ever.

It's called the AK-47 and there are many variations including some versions with folding stocks 'cause it doesn't have that silly buffer hanging off the back. It's WAY cooler looking than an AR-15 too.

I hear they've built quite a few of them, so you should be able to find one without too much trouble. Give an AK-47 a try. Mine are great.

Full disclosure: I also own an AR-15 in .223 only because I might need to shoot that ammo more quickly than I can from my several bolt guns.

IMO --> The same things that make a 223/5.56 or a 6.8 reliable in the AR type operating system will make a 7.62X39 reliable in the AR's. Proper mags, proper gas, proper bbl length, proper lube, proper ammo loading, etc, etc.are all a part of making a AR/X39 operate properly.
I have seen quite a few people take great care building a 5.56/223 AR but the seem to throw together a weapon chambered in X39.
I have seen AR's chambered in X39 shoot well under MOA. I have seen well put together bolt guns shoot under 1/2MOA.
Let's give the 7.62X39 it's due respect. It is essentially a 30-30Win that can be chambered in a hi-cap semi-auto. ---SAWMAN
