I am thinking about putting an Apex, Wilson Combat or similar barrel in my M&P 9mm pro? This gun is used for IDPA and a few other competitions - not bullseye type shooting. Anyone have experience with this? Is it worth the 2 bills to make this modification?

No. They require gunsmith fitting that if not done correctly will adversely affect reliability.

I've read a lot of good things about the Apex SDI barrel. Apex has put out how-to videos on fitting, not that difficult from reports.

An 8 inch circle at 12.5 yards is 64 MOA.
Are aftermarket barrels cool? Absolutely! Is it worth a whole other half a gun's worth in accuracy improvement? That's most certainly debatable.
