    One man's experience...

Ron from the Las Vegas gun range Battlefield Vegas, where, like many Vegas range’s they only allow their rental guns to be used, shared some thoughts on how different AK rifles fail after tens after thousands of rounds...

How many rounds can an AK fire before it breaks down?

Lots of variables, What kind a ak, year of the parts kit, who assemblied the parts kits, maintance etc. I have ready the entire article that was written about the rifles at battlefield and most of the failures were on full auto rental guns that they converted to fullbauto.

The article hit a couple of those variables. Minus the high round count, the rifles are probably taken care of pretty well. You're removing a lot of the stupid stuff a conscript/soldier might do to break but it's still some good info.

That operation has the volume to get some great data points on multiple platforms.

if you consider the forces, heat and friction involved in firing any weapon in fill auto - the ak performs amazingly well for its size.
As weapons have evolved....the trend is towards multi burst modes in smaller arms....leaving the continuous fire for weapons with more mass to offset the heat and recoil.
Just the limiting factor of a barrel that cannot be quickly replaced....makes the Ak ...as well as most other light rifles in a category of limited use for full auto.
