I cant figure out why my AR won't charge a round when the bolt is locked back but will when I pull the charging handle back. Before I upgraded my extractor spring, buffer, and buffer spring my AR could easily charge a round by now it doesn't. It seems like my bolt carrier isn't being held back far enough. Here are a few pictures before and after. Any ideas? It might sound like a stupid question but I am a little puzzled. The extractor spring is a BCM, Spring is a JP enterprises, and the buffer is a Vltor H2.

I see what you're saying now. I'd haver to look at one of mine real quick, which ain't gonna happen tonight. Make sure buffer is held in with detent. Also, you sure bolt is oriented properly in carrier assembly? On my phone and its difficult to see for sure

Yeah the bolt is orientated correctly. The rifle will charge if I manually with the charging handle and eject a round just fiine but when it is held back and I release it that is when I get the problem. Also the buffer is held in with the detent.

Definitely looks like your bolt is not being held correctly. Here is a quick pic of my CMMG with the bolt catch engaged.

In the pic you posted if appears the bolt catch is catching the carrier. It should be catching the bolt face, like the pic from dgladden. I'd double check assembly on the bcg and verify the buffet/spring are installed correct and correct size

Bolt catch is catching on the carrier, not on the bolt like it should. Sounds like you installed either a rifle buffer or a rifle buffer spring in a carbine length buffer tube, which prevents the bcg from going back as far as it should.

Well I feel like a complete dumbass. Apparently if you order a Vltor buffer you have to buy a buffer extension. I didn't read the fine print this time. I just read H2 AR-15 carbine buffer and saw it was the cheapest and bought that....... I'm going to act like this never happened.

By A5 I meant their proprietary tube/buffer/spring setup. There are several options on those buffer weights (I use an h5 for a 9mm ar sans spacer). It sounds like you got the H2 version of their longer (a5 style) buffer. Correct?

Yeah I did. I went back to MidwayUSA website and below the specs and the description it say "This buffer is designed specifically for use in the Vltor A5 Receiver Extension Buffer Tube, and will NOT fit in a regular AR-15 carbine or rifle tube. Attempting to use this buffer in a standard length AR-15 carbine or rifle buffer tube Could Result in Damage to the host firearm." That I didn't see or read. I will probably just get the A5 receiver extension.
