What would you buy and where would you buy it ?
I'm thinking one of the Colt 6920 Magpul Editions from Grabagun. I'm leaning towards black but the FDE model looks good too.
So, if you had $1,000 to blow, what would you get and where would you get it ?
I know a lot of people build their own but I'm not interested in that. I like factory stuff.

    What's your intended use?

I like to build my own, so I don't pay much attention to factory rifles.

If it were me, I would look for the following specs:
16", 1 in 7" twist, mid gas barrel
    long(ish) free float handguard
quality adjustable stock that locks up tight

I would also try to have enough $$$ left over to install a better trigger.

Yea if you can or know somebody that can help build it then I would go that route. You will usually want to change out most stuff anyway once the sickness hits you so you'll be spending more on top of the OE rifle anyway.

^^ ditto. Build your own. Splurge on the optics and trigger. You can order the upper and lower receivers separate online. If you can put a round peg thru a round hole, you've just built your AR. ;)

Smith and Wesson's are hard to beat for the money. I have an FDE Magpul mid-length version and I can't recall ever having any sort of malfunction with it.

I have a Smith & Wesson Sport 5.56 and a Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 and both are good guns. I guess I'm just leaning towards the Colt because it's the original plus resale (if I ever decide to sell it) would be good.
OK, I know it's not THE original but it's what most people think when they think AR.
I just wouldn't care to build one. I don't like customizing cars either.

Colts under $1000 right now cuz the company is in a little financial trouble from what I understand (could EASILY be wrong)
For just over 1000 (maybe 11-13ish) u could have BCM OR DANIEL DEFENSE..and from everything I read its hard to beat their quality.

I understand the "value" of the colt name. BUT, if you're looking for some sort of investment in guns... buy lowers. Much higher return there. If you're looking for something to shoot and maybe sell, I'd still stick with the magpul midlength. Everyone's got their own taste, YMMV.

Yes, I have heard that they are in trouble and that's why prices are down right now. Aren't all parts interchangable anyway (just in case they go under) ?
I guess maybe what I should have said is "I'm pretty well set on the Colt 6920 Magpul edition in black or FDE. Anybody know any reason not to buy it ?"
I have heard good things about the Daniel Defense though.
