My wife's uncle, who is a Tennessee resident, is wanting to buy a handgun from me. I know it will have to be transferred to him but my question is can I just give it to him and let him transfer it once he gets back home or does it have to be shipped to an FFL in Tennessee?

The most legal way would be to ship direct to his FFL in TN, let him pick it up there. If you give it to him here, that's not much different than selling to a non-resident. I'm not real up on the "gifting" of firearms but the transfer covers both of you.

    I'm not a lawyer.

If you transfer a firearm to another person across state lines, be it a sale or a gift, then by law it must go through a FFL holder. You can not give it to him to take up there unless he is acting on behalf of the Tennessee FFL holder.
