I feel your pain because I'm down to 1 lb. of Red Dot. That means I can only load about 1,500 more rounds of .45 acp.. May have to start buying the abundant Bullseye.
Yeah, I cannot find any Win 231. Luckily, with the 410 loading I want to do it seems Win 296 is one of the preferred powders, and I have a full pound of that. Talked to a clerk at Gander Mountain about carrying reloading supplies since so few in the area carrying them, and he said the chain is getting so few supplies they keep them centrally staged and available online. Bummer for sure.
Yup, good stuff but now it's hard to find as an honest politician.
I had an 8 lb jug when I lived in PA but gave it to a friend when I moved to AL. Now I wish I'd kept it.
Im out of that too. My empty powder jugs box sure is filling up a lot faster than my full powder jugs box. Im gonna have to try to start loading pistols with imr 4064 soon.
Here is some info on Maxam CSB-5 barrowed from another forum:
The label on the jugs said ball powder. In fact, it's round flake powder. They are very uniform in size and about 1mm in diameter. The grains don't stick to things like the 7625 does. But the stuff does "float" around a bit if you aren't careful when you dump it. The consistency is almost like someone cut small disks from paper. I had to be careful when dumping into the dish on the scale to keep from losing a few.
I had my Dillon 550 set up for 5.7gns of SR-7625. When I switched over to CSB-5, it threw 4.64, so the stuff is probably much less dense than the SR-7625.
While loading I ran 10 separate drops to check on how it meters. I got: 4.46, 4.42, 4.40, 4.46, 4.46, 4.44, 4.46, 4.38, 4.5, 4.5. That looks pretty decent. I don't have the data written down. But when I did this with the 7625, I think the ES was .1. This flake powder is .12. When loading 9mm, the ES was less than .1gns for 10 drops of CSB-5
At the range:
For the 45 ACP with a Bayou 230, 1.223 OAL, Winchester primers, R-P Brass from my SAR K2 45
I didn't notice much smoke on any of these. At similar velocity, I couldn't tell which is softer shooting CSB-5 or 7625. I've yet to shoot even 1 C classifier, so I may not have developed good enough feel to tell the difference. At same velocity, the charge ratio of CSB-5 to 7625 was .91. That seems like quite a spread from 45. I was really surprised that I made my desired PF for 45 at my lowest test load, I wasn't sure it was going to cycle the gun. I made my desired PF for 9mm at my highest test load.
I have an extra 3# can of Winchester 571. Old but never opened. I have data for loading 38 SP., 40, & 45ACP plus 12 ga. mag. shotshells. Might sell for the right price.
I called American Reloading this morning. Jesse told me this was Maxam CSB-5 powder mentioned above. 8 lbs for $172+ $42 for shipping and HAZMAT combined. $215 for 8lbs or $27 per lb. Order 8 more lbs and add approx $10 more as you save on the HAZ. About $25 per lb. Shipped in 4 lb jugs. Think I will wait this one out a while.
