I am wanting to get a m1a and am undecided between the SA 16" and 18" barrels. What are the pros and cons of each. I'm thinking this will be a plinker/hunting rig right now. If we have any M1A gurus out there educate me about them. I've been an AR guy and am going to give the m1A a go.

I appreciate the link for me to read up on. It does help for sure but I'm looking for some real world technical information. What is the difference in the models 16-18" models the socom and the standard. What about velocity and energy? Weight with optics? I'm sorry I should have been a little more specific.

You will be lucky to get 50-75fps out of the extra 2" of barrel. What are you using it for? Plinking or home defense? Maybe at most 8oz more with the 18vs 16" barrel.

Hunting, home defense, and plinking. I'm really liking the stats of the 18" barrel and the fact that it's quieter.

The quality of the barrel, twist rates and such are more important than 16 or 18". a wylde barrel is much better than others, all depends on what you are going to do with it.

I don't shoot without ear pro unless I'm in the woods hunting deer. I'll admit to taking a shot without ear pro when a buck steps out in front of me. That's my only concern about the noise level.

the 18" will be less maneuverable in the home, remember the muzzle device adds another 2" so you will be at 20" on an 18" barrel, try pointing your broom around the hose going through doorways...get a 14.7" add the pinned MD for a true 16".
